Christmas Day

Super dorks in their capes

Terrariums

Some days being a mom can be really annoying. Take terrarium-building day...

I had gone around gathering all the necessary ingredients: containers from Goodwill, aquarium rocks and charcoal from the fish store, potting soil from Ace... Then I could BARELY get Tristen to gather moss from the backyard with me. And he only stayed interested in terrarium assembly long enough to spill rocks and dirt all over the place. I ended up in the kitchen like the little red hen, doing everything all by myself -- especially the clean up! I felt so annoyed and under-appreciated, even though I know better than to expect gratitude from a three-year-old.

Now we have terrariums all over the house. The moss is thriving, and each container is sprouting little fiddle-head ferns (I had tried to throw some fern fronds in each one, hoping the spores would germinate). Almost makes that day worth it.

The night before Christmas

Symphony day

Tristen and I took the bus to the symphony in early December. We arrived early, and musicians in the lobby were helping kids play instruments. Tristen tried the violin, the cello, and the xylophone (his favorite).

(We took a picture of another little girl who was there with her Grandma. Grandma had forgotten the camera -- hope she finds this blog! To my mom and the little girl's grandma: get the whole slideshow and download copies of the pictures on our Picasa site.)

It was Tristen's first experience with theater seats, and he had a hard time weighting his down enough to keep it from folding back up on him. I had to sit with my leg on it for the entire performance.

Once the music started, Tristen was so mesmerized that I couldn't even get him to answer me when I asked if he wanted to move to my lap (my leg was tired of holding down the seat!).

He did acknowledge my presence mid-way through -- when he reached over and put his little hand on mine. They were singing Carol of the Bells, and I felt so happy that I couldn't help but cry a little.

We ended the trip with Stumptown Coffee and hot chocolate while waiting for the bus home. Then the bus driver gave Tristen a piece of peppermint candy, reminding us, once again, of how much we love the good ole 66.

Box of trouble

Spooks

Halloween highlights: a house full of preschoolers, a big pot of soup, lots of trick-or-treaters, and Becca's antics (see previous post).

How could I never have posted this?

Becca -- so fun to have around on Halloween. She squeezed into three different kids' costumes to go heckle across-the-street Paul into giving her candy. Reminded me of Saturday Night Live: "No ma'am; I'm a dolphin ma'am."

Becca was also ruthless to the teens who knocked on the door with cell phones and loot bags but no costumes. She made them stand still while she used Tristen's markers to draw disguises on their faces. Made Krumm nervous about getting the new paint job egged. So hilarious.
